Profile
Aquarium of Rhodes: A Window into the Aegean’s Marine Life
Located at the northern tip of Rhodes Town, the Aquarium of Rhodes, formerly known as the Hydrobiological Station of Rhodes, is a marine research center, museum, and aquarium offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into the underwater world of the Mediterranean.
A Historic Landmark by the Sea
Housed in a striking Art Deco building, the aquarium was constructed between 1934 and 1935 during the Italian occupation of Rhodes. Designed by Italian architect Armando Bernabiti, it originally served as the Royal Biological Research Institute of Rhodes, focusing on marine biology, hydrology, and fisheries research.
Following Rhodes’ reunification with Greece in 1947, the facility became part of the Hellenic Hydrobiological Institute. Since 1963, it has been known as the Hydrobiological Station of Rhodes, operating under the National Centre for Marine Research.
Over the decades, it has expanded its mission to include marine conservation, education, and rehabilitation of sea creatures, making it an essential stop for ocean enthusiasts.
A Journey into the Deep
Stepping into the aquarium feels like entering a natural underwater cave, with its dimly lit passageways and rocky interiors. Visitors can explore 13 large tanks and 15 smaller ones, housing a diverse array of Aegean and Mediterranean marine life, all thriving in a carefully maintained seawater environment.
Among the fascinating creatures on display:
🐠 Colorful reef fish and sea anemones
🐙 Octopuses, crabs, and lobsters
🦈 Sharks and bivalves
🐢 Sea turtles and Mediterranean monk seals
The museum section showcases preserved marine specimens, including:
🔹 A 2,000-year-old skeleton of a Mediterranean monk seal, discovered in an ancient grave
🔹 Embalmed dolphins, sharks, and sea turtles
🔹 A freshwater habitat featuring the Rhodes minnow, an endangered species unique to the island
The facility also plays an important role in rehabilitating injured sea turtles and seals, with a dedicated holding area for incoming marine life needing special care.
Conservation and Education
The Aquarium of Rhodes is more than just an attraction—it is an active center for marine conservation and research. It collaborates with local authorities, research institutions, and environmental organizations to:
🌊 Protect endangered marine species
🐟 Promote sustainable fishing practices
📚 Educate visitors through interactive programs and workshops
Its mission is to inspire a deeper understanding of Rhodes’ marine biodiversity while encouraging conservation efforts among locals and tourists alike.
